The Trimble Navigation 99133 is a device that we have had come into our shop several times for issues with the USB port. Most often, the Micro USB port is clearly damaged through visual inspection, with bent/broken pins and/or shielding for the port. In some cases, we have even seen the port completely broken free from the motherboard. Regardless of the damage, our skilled technicians are up to the challenge.
The micro-USB micro-B port utilized in the Trimble Navigation 99133 unit is an interesting connection that we have not come across very frequently. The port is a through hole, vertically oriented surface mount port. This vertical orientation of the port seems to put additional stress onto the connection and may explain why these ports seem to fail in similar ways in each of the repairs that we have conducted for this unit. An advantage of the through-hole style connection however is that the likelihood of damaged traces is often reduced, making the repair process faster and less costly for our customers.
The repair process is generally quite like other USB port repairs that we take care of: The motherboard of the Trimble Navigation 99133 is first removed to ensure that no damage occurs to the enclosure or other components during the soldering process. At this point, if any of the port is still attached to the board, the solder is removed from the connections and any remaining segments of the port are extracted using a hot air soldering rework station.
With the port removed, the old solder can then be removed from the port’s connections on the motherboard to prep for the application of fresh solder which is critical to a long-lasting repair.
With the through-hole connection points now free of solder, the new port can be installed properly. The port is aligned into position and the through hole connections are filled with fresh solder. The port is now in its final position. The repair is now complete, and the device appears to be in basically brand-new condition due to the work of our technicians. The enclosure and motherboard of the Trimble 99133 unit can then be reassembled and returned to the customer.
