As part of the iPhone X series and up Face ID biometrics now locks the front facing hardware to the motherboard which limits the options of replacement parts and repairs. For any replacements on the front ear speaker flex cable this would result in a loss of the Face ID function feature.
Something as simple as the ear speaker being damaged from water or technician damage would typically render the Face ID to fail if the whole flex cable assembly was replaced.
As apart of our advanced repair services we are able to de-solder only the speaker which by itself is not paired to any other component. We can then micro solder a replacement ear speaker directly on the flex cable to maintain Face ID all while repairing the sound function of this ear speaker.
How do they pair the front flex cable to the logic board? Apple installs a IC chip directly on the flex (shown in green) which has a serial number. When the phone boots it compares the serial numbers of all parts involved in the biometrics and if it cannot see one or is not the expected match then Face ID will fail.
To bypass this we can simply remove the speaker by de-soldering the speaker contacts (shown in red)
